Wilderness Navigation course 2010

The Wilderness Navigation course 2010; wouldn’t be the worst place to get lost though, would it?

We’ve recently uploaded a new collection of photos from this year’s Wilderness Navigation course, where Woodlore student Alexis got some great pictures of her week in the woods:

An interesting find…

Deer remains found on Woodlore’s Woodsense Tracking course

An interesting discovery was made last week on our Woodlore Tracking course, when deer remains were discovered in the woods.

Is anyone able to identify the type of deer they came from?

Camp Craft 2010

Woodlore’s Camp Craft course, 2010

Colette, one of the Woodlore office team members, recently went to visit Woodlore’s first Camp Craft course of the season.

The course was in full swing and the sun was shining, so she she managed to snap some pictures of our students working away on various axe and woodwork techniques.

If you’d like to take a look you can see the photos here:

Canoeing in the Ardeche 2010

2010's Canoeing in the Ardeche group

This year’s Canoeing in the Ardeche course took place last week, but not without complications! Weeks of torrential rain and hailstorms left the usual route of the gorge at such a high water level that it would have been illegal to paddle down.

Choosing and using an axe

Over the years, Woodlore have come to stock a wide range of Gransfors Axes, so we appreciate that it may be tricky picking the right one for the job.

The following video – taken from the DVD extras of Ray Mears, Bushcraft Survival – Series 2  – covers the various benefits and primary uses of Gransfors’ three most popular axes (from smallest to largest):

We also stock a wide range of Gransfors Splitting Axes in our shop; if you’d like any advice on these models just give us a call and we’ll be happy to help.

Also, the use of axes is covered on our Camp Craft course.

The following interview covers Ray’s latest series, Survival with Ray Mears.

How did you feel about taking on the Survival brand?

“It was a real privilege because I grew with the Survival brand as a boy. There were some incredible documentaries and remarkable programming. It was a real privilege but also a bit daunting because you’re following in the wake of such incredible programming of the past.

“But we needed to find a new way of doing it as well and I like that sort of challenge. To have the opportunity to talk about natural history was fantastic because that’s what took me outdoors in the first instance.

“Tracking is my passion and to be asked to track leopards, bears and wolves – who wouldn’t jump at the chance?” Continue reading
